The Karting For All tensioned structure in Tunisia demonstrates how lightweight membrane engineering combined with architectural lighting can transform a functional sports venue into a regional landmark, visible both day and night.
Why This Project Stands Out 🚀
Located in Monastir, Tunisia, the Karting For All project is more than a standard membrane installation. Built on top of a first-floor slab near the shoreline, it required careful consideration of load-bearing, anchoring, and wind resistance—challenges that demand both engineering expertise and design creativity.
The Jutent team successfully managed these constraints to deliver a structure that is safe, durable, and visually striking.
- 🏗️ Total membrane area: 1,057 m²
- 🎮 Playground tensioned structure: 961 m²
- 🚪 Landscape entrance structure: 96 m²
- 🌬️ Designed for offshore wind loads and slab limitations
- 💡 Landmark effect achieved through integrated architectural lighting
- 🌍 Part of Jutent’s growing portfolio of African tensile projects
Project Overview|Function Meets Design
🎯 Playground Tensioned Structure (961 m²)
Covers the karting activity area, prioritizing large unobstructed space, safety, and circulation flow, allowing visitors to enjoy uninterrupted views and open areas.
🚪 Landscape Gate Structure (96 m²)
Serves as a visual and functional entrance, creating a strong arrival experience. At night, lighting transforms the gate into a glowing landmark.
Engineering Perspective|“Roof Beyond a Roof” 🧠
Engineering Challenge: Constructing above a first-floor slab in a coastal environment introduced three major issues:
- Slab load capacity
- Wind uplift and offshore forces
- Limited anchoring space
The Jutent engineering team optimized membrane curvature, anchoring methods, and structural load paths to ensure safety without overloading the building. The project was delivered in early 2018, meeting schedule and quality guarantees.
Lighting Elevates the Experience 🌙
Daylight filtering through the membrane creates soft, diffused interior lighting, eliminating harsh shadows. At night, internal illumination passes through the membrane, turning the structure into a sculptural light form visible from afar, making it a landmark in Tunisia.
Advantages of Tensioned Structures 🌐
From an engineering and architectural standpoint, tensioned membrane structures offer:
- ⚖️ Ultra-lightweight (~1/30 of conventional building weight)
- 🌉 Large-span capability without internal supports
- 🔥 Flame-retardant and safe for public use
- ⚡ Fast fabrication and installation
- 🌱 Energy-efficient daylight usage
- 🎨 High design flexibility for expressive forms
These qualities make them ideal for stadiums, entrance corridors, public plazas, exhibition halls, shopping centers, and recreational venues.
Jutent’s Expanding African Portfolio 🌍
Karting For All is part of Jutent’s growing presence in Africa, alongside:
- 🏟️ North Sudan National Stadium Stand Structure
- 🏨 Egyptian Hotel Landscape Membrane Project
- 🌴 Nigerian Landscape Tensioned Structures
Each project adapts to local climate, function, and architectural context, combining performance with aesthetic appeal.
Final Thoughts|Beyond Structure
A tensioned structure is more than a roof—it is a spatial tool, a visual canvas, and a city landmark. With careful engineering, creative design, and integrated lighting, Jutent delivers solutions that are functional, visually inspiring, and enduring.
