Project Overview

This project is located in Hengqin District, Zhuhai, China, and was completed in October 2024. It is a tensile membrane canopy system designed for school corridors, inspired by the organic form of “clouds.” The project was developed in two phases, with Phase I covering approximately 600 m² and Phase II approximately 800 m², for a total covered area of about 1,630 m². The structure has a standard width of 8 m and an overall height of approximately 2.8 m, with a total steel consumption of around 41 tons. The primary steel structure is treated with an epoxy zinc-rich primer and white topcoat to ensure long-term durability and corrosion resistance. The roofing material is 1100 g/m² white PVDF architectural membrane, featuring B1-class fire resistance and fully compliant with public building safety standards.

Challenge - Solution

The canopy is installed in key circulation areas, including the school entrance parent pick-up zone and the main pedestrian corridor connecting the security office to the teaching buildings. The client required a membrane canopy that provides effective sun and rain protection while reflecting a natural, modern aesthetic consistent with the overall campus architecture. In response, our team proposed a biomimetic tensile membrane design featuring interconnected cloud-like forms. A unified white color scheme was applied to both the membrane and steel structure to ensure visual harmony with the surrounding environment. Comprehensive structural analysis and wind-load calculations were completed to guarantee safety and performance, and the final design was approved by the client.

Installation - Support

Installation was carried out by our professional team under restricted site conditions within the school campus, requiring construction during student holiday periods. Phase I was completed during the summer break, while Phase II was installed during the National Day holiday. A flexible installation strategy combining overall lifting and segmented erection was adopted to meet the tight schedule and site constraints. Through close coordination with the client, the project was completed on schedule and successfully delivered. The finished canopy provides reliable weather protection for students and staff while creating a distinctive architectural landmark within the campus.
