Project Overview
This project is located on the rooftop of the Hilton Hotel in Dili, Timor-Leste, and was completed in September 2021. It is a landscape tensile membrane structure for the hotel’s rooftop leisure area, featuring a cable-edge design. The canopy measures approximately 18 m × 9 m with a height of about 3 m, covering a total projected area of 163 sqm. The steel structure consumes approximately 2 tons of steel.
The steel framework is treated with an epoxy zinc-rich primer and a Grey topcoat for corrosion protection, ensuring long-term durability. The roofing material is a white PVDF architectural membrane with a weight of 1100 g/sqm and a B1 fire rating, fully meeting safety requirements for public buildings.

Challenge - Solution
Situated on a seaside hotel rooftop, the client requested additional shaded areas for the leisure space, with a structure that balances functionality and aesthetic appeal. The project was intended as a semi-functional, semi-scenic canopy. Key requirements included:
Canopy with both sunshade functionality and modern visual appeal
Structural integration with the main rooftop framework
Compliance with wind load safety standards
Based on the site conditions and client requirements, we designed a multi-level tensile membrane canopy supported by columns and cable edges. This solution ensures functional performance while highlighting the artistic flexibility of tensile membrane structures. A full structural analysis and safety verification were completed, and the final design was approved by the client.
Installation - Support
During construction, our engineering team provided on-site guidance. Due to site constraints, large machinery could not access the area, and column installation was performed manually. With professional
supervision, the project was completed on schedule. The canopy enhances comfort for the rooftop leisure area while also serving as an attractive architectural feature.
