Project Overview

This project is a customized crown-shaped tensile membrane canopy for a restaurant and event venue in Nigeria. Completed in August 2016, the total coverage area is approximately 480 square meters. The structure creates a distinctive architectural landmark while providing reliable shade and rain protection for outdoor dining and wedding ceremonies. In this project, the contractor delivered a full-scope solution, including structural design, membrane fabrication, steel manufacturing, and installation guidance. Through professional engineering design and precise fabrication, the project achieved strong performance in durability, drainage efficiency, and construction speed, ensuring smooth completion and successful operation.

Challenge - Solution

To manage the large volume of rainwater collected by the crown cap, the roof was designed with controlled curvature and low points where internal drainage paths and downpipes are installed. Rainwater flows naturally along the membrane surface and is discharged efficiently. All drainage components are hidden within the steel structure or edges, preserving the clean appearance and unobstructed layout of the space below. Through precise structural design, integrated drainage, and professional fabrication, the project achieved excellent performance in functionality, safety, and construction efficiency, ensuring timely completion and successful operation.

Installation - Support

The installation process involved precise prefabrication, on-site assembly, and careful membrane tensioning to ensure quality and safety. All main steel members were prefabricated and treated with anti-corrosion coating in the factory, then transported and lifted into position to minimize on-site welding. Membrane panels were unfolded, positioned, and temporarily fixed on the ground to ensure correct alignment and tension before installation. The crown-shaped roof cap was then installed on top of the main structure, with panels connected and tensioned to achieve the designed geometry and smooth surface. To ensure long-term performance, ongoing technical support was provided. The owner’s team received guidance and training on routine inspection and membrane maintenance. Regular checks of tension and connection points were recommended, especially before and after the rainy season, to extend membrane life. Remote engineering support is also available for future lighting, decorative elements, or expansions, ensuring safe modifications and reliable operation.
