Project Overview

This project is located on the rooftop of a newly constructed hospital in Baiyun District, Guangzhou, China, and was completed in July 2022. The canopy features a central single-column and cable-edge design, measuring approximately 24 m × 24 m with a height of about 12 m, covering a total projected area of 576 sqm. The steel structure consumes approximately 3.6 tons of steel. The steel framework is treated with an epoxy zinc-rich primer and white topcoat for corrosion protection, enhancing durability. The roofing material is a 1100 g/sqm white PVDF architectural membrane with a B1 fire rating, fully meeting safety standards for public buildings.

Challenge - Solution

Located on the hospital rooftop, the client requested a landscape tensile membrane canopy on the concrete framework, providing sunshade while leaving space for rooftop equipment such as central air conditioning units. The project was designed as a semi-functional, semi-scenic structure, with the following requirements: Canopy with both sunshade functionality and modern aesthetic appeal Structural integration with the main rooftop framework Compliance with wind load safety standards Based on site conditions and client requirements, we designed a solution combining a central single-column with cable-edge support and multi-level membrane panels along the perimeter. This design ensures functional performance while showcasing the artistic curves of tensile membrane structures. Full structural analysis and safety verification were completed, and the final design was approved by the client.
