Project Overview
This project is located at Guangxi Minzu University in Nanning, Guangxi, China, and was completed in December 2022. It is a pedestrian walkway tensile membrane canopy installed on an existing bridge along a lakeside area. The canopy measures approximately 60 m × 6 m with a central height of about 3 m, covering a total projected area of around 360 sqm. The steel structure consumes approximately 7 tons of steel.
The steel framework is protected with an epoxy zinc-rich primer and a yellow topcoat, providing enhanced durability and corrosion resistance. The roofing material is a white PVDF architectural membrane with a weight of 1100 g/sqm and a B1 fire rating, fully compliant with safety standards for public buildings.
Challenge and Solution
The pedestrian walkway serves as a key passage connecting teaching buildings and student dormitories and is located beside a lake. To improve daily circulation comfort and provide sun and rain protection, the university decided to install a canopy along the walkway.
The client specified clear requirements:
A functional canopy with a modern architectural appearance
Structural integration with the existing bridge and surrounding environment
Compliance with wind load safety standards
During the design phase, our team held multiple technical discussions with the client. Based on site conditions and functional needs, a tensile membrane structure composed of curved steel tubes was proposed. While ensuring practical performance, the design highlights the artistic flexibility of curved membrane structures. Comprehensive structural analysis and safety calculations were conducted, and the final design was approved after verification.
Installation
and Support
Installation was carried out by our engineering team on site. Due to the lakeside bridge location, access for large machinery was limited, so a scissor lift was used for sectional assembly and welding. During construction, pedestrian traffic was temporarily diverted to ensure safety.
With professional on-site installation and coordination, the project was successfully completed and delivered on schedule. The canopy not only improves pedestrian comfort but also enhances the campus landscape. The client highly recognized our integrated service covering design, fabrication, and on-site technical support.
Application
The pedestrian walkway tensile membrane canopy solution applied in this project is suitable for walkways, corridors, and passageways in educational, commercial, and industrial buildings.
